More Volkswagen Hybrids On The Way, Jetta May Be Next

Volkswagen has just taken the wraps off its new 2011 Touareg SUV, which in hybrid form delivers a V-8 like 375 horsepower and 428 pound-feet of torque from its V-6/electric motor combination and a relatively frugal fuel economy (European combined) of 29 mpg. However, this is just the tip of the iceberg for Volkswagen's new hybrid onslaught, which is expected to eventually span the automaker's full line of models, including minicars, hatchbacks and sedans, and even diesels.
The information comes from the automaker's hybrid development chief, Eike Feldhusen, who revealed to What Car? that there will likely be a long line of successors to the Touareg Hybrid. "We have ideas for hybrids from the smallest car to the biggest, but this Touareg is the best way to showcase the possibilities," he explained.
Feldhusen went on to reveal that Volkswagen's hybrid system, which sandwiches an electric motor in between the engine and automatic transmission, is a modular system designed for use in a wide range of models. Some unique elements of Volkswagen's design is the "coasting" feature, which works by disengaging the engine from the transmission as soon as the driver releases the accelerator pedal and allows the vehicle to roll significantly longer since drag torque losses are eliminated. There's also a regenerative braking system to help top up the batteries and an engine-stop start system. A similar set-up is being used by Porsche for its upcoming Cayenne S Hybrid as well as Audi for its next-generation Q7.
Feldhusen wasn't willing to reveal which model would be next in line to receive the hybrid treatment but the most likely option would be something new like the forthcoming Jetta Coupe, previewed by the 2010 Volkswagen New Compact Coupe Concept presented at last month's Detroit Auto Show.

Volkswagen Beetle : Launches in India on December

The original Volkswagen Beetle, which is also popularly called as the “Bug”, has emerged into a new model, with distinct features of its own. German automaker Volkswagen introduced its first model into the market in the year of 1938, while the latest model was brought out in the year 1998. The new model differs from the earlier ones in having its engine in the front and the luggage storage in the rear part of the car. Now, very soon, Indians are also going to experience the fun of riding this sport car.

Volkswagen is likely to announce the launch of Beetle in India, in the beginning of December 2009. However, unlike what is being believed, the veteran car company does not have any plans to compete with the Indian toy car, Nano; as the Beetle will be priced 15 times more, due to the high duty imposed on imported cars. Moreover, the vintage car will provide a speed limit as high as 180 km/hr, whereas the Nano can only touch up to 103 km/hr. Beetle has a conventional front engine.

Volkswagen Touareg Coming in Mid 2009

After the Passat and the Jetta, Volkswagen will now officially introduce the Touareg, its first SUV for the Indian car market. The Touareg is currently available as CBU under special imports and as such cannot be registered as a company car, and the delivery period is 3-3.5 months. The Touareg shares its platform with the Porsche’s Cayenne, which is currently being sold in the Indian market.

Engine:
The Volkswagen Touareg could possess a 3.0 litre V6 TDI DPF heart. The DPF stands for Diesel Particulate Filter which like the catalytic converter converts the harmful gases and an additional feature of filtering the particulates. This powerplant can produce a torque of 500Nm at 1,750rpm and the 225 horses can do the 0-100kph run in less than 10 seconds.

Being a high-end sports utility vehicle, the car has active and passive safety features like ABS, six airbags, brake pad wear indicators and crash optimized pedals.
