Fiat 500

Though the Chrysler-Fiat merger faces a bumpy road ahead, and many pundits think it's a hopeless case--DaimlerChrysler redux--there's at least one bright spot for Americans in the mess: the 2011 Fiat 500. And it's coming at the end of this year.
Ralph Gilles confirmed the arrival date today at the Chicago Economic Club. When it does arrive, it's expected to get four different variants, including the standard three-door hatch, the 500C cabriolet, a "Giardinetta" wagon, and the model that is expected to launch Fiat back to American sales: the 500 Abarth.
The Fiat 500 Abarth will bring the brand back in style, with a turbocharged 1.4-liter T-Jet gasoline engine rated at 135 horsepower, the Abarth isn't as power-packed a mighty-mite as the 160-horsepower Abarth SS, but it's aggressively styled and sure to put the MINI on notice--and the 2011 Audi A1, too, if it ever arrives on our shores.
In fact, the range of 500s expected to land Stateside looks suspiciously similar to the MINI range. There have even been rumors that a crossover version is in the works, a la MINI's Countryman.
Whatever form the 2011 Fiat 500 takes on its U.S. debut, we're looking forward to the chance to hop behind the wheel and put it to the test.

More Volkswagen Hybrids On The Way, Jetta May Be Next

Volkswagen has just taken the wraps off its new 2011 Touareg SUV, which in hybrid form delivers a V-8 like 375 horsepower and 428 pound-feet of torque from its V-6/electric motor combination and a relatively frugal fuel economy (European combined) of 29 mpg. However, this is just the tip of the iceberg for Volkswagen's new hybrid onslaught, which is expected to eventually span the automaker's full line of models, including minicars, hatchbacks and sedans, and even diesels.
The information comes from the automaker's hybrid development chief, Eike Feldhusen, who revealed to What Car? that there will likely be a long line of successors to the Touareg Hybrid. "We have ideas for hybrids from the smallest car to the biggest, but this Touareg is the best way to showcase the possibilities," he explained.
Feldhusen went on to reveal that Volkswagen's hybrid system, which sandwiches an electric motor in between the engine and automatic transmission, is a modular system designed for use in a wide range of models. Some unique elements of Volkswagen's design is the "coasting" feature, which works by disengaging the engine from the transmission as soon as the driver releases the accelerator pedal and allows the vehicle to roll significantly longer since drag torque losses are eliminated. There's also a regenerative braking system to help top up the batteries and an engine-stop start system. A similar set-up is being used by Porsche for its upcoming Cayenne S Hybrid as well as Audi for its next-generation Q7.
Feldhusen wasn't willing to reveal which model would be next in line to receive the hybrid treatment but the most likely option would be something new like the forthcoming Jetta Coupe, previewed by the 2010 Volkswagen New Compact Coupe Concept presented at last month's Detroit Auto Show.

Warpia USB Adapter connects your PC to your TV wirelessly

If you're looking for ways to connect your desktop or laptop to your HDTV, you have the option of running a really long video cable from your computer to the back of your set, but depending on the type of TV you have and the type of computer you have, you may be missing the necessary ports to connect the two together.

The set comes in two pieces, a wireless PC adapter that connects to your desktop or laptop via USB 2.0, and the display adapter that receives the audio and video signal from your computer and routes it to your TV. The base station connects to your TV via VGA PC port or HDMI, and supports audio over HDMI or a 3.5mm stereo jack. The solution costs $179.99 and is available now in retail stores and online.

The adapter will work at a range of up to 30 feet and supports a maximum resolution of 1400x1050, which works for videos in HD at 720p, but not 1080p. Even so, since the solution has both VGA and HDMI ports, you can use it just as easily in conference rooms at the office or with your friend's HD set using your laptop as you can to get your favorite video podcasts on your own big screen at home using your home theatre PC.

Mophie iPhone credit card reader

iPhone accessory maker Mophie has something interesting up its sleeve. They will be offering a credit card reader for the smartphone along with a transaction app. The whole thing is integrated into an iPhone case, so you can keep the reader on permanently, as long as you don’t mind the added bulk.

As long as the app is good and the price of the service is affordable, this should do well. Assuming you use your credit card often anyway. We should get more info at CES 2010.

24-Port USB Hub

This USB hub has 24 ports. Who could possibly use such a thing? I regularly have to re-jig my USB setup to fit in everything I use (not to mention the gear I test) and I can’t ever see myself needing almost a quarter-century of sockets.

We suppose it could be good for those who need to write a whole lot of thumb-drives at once, although there are purpose built devices for that which don’t make your peripherals radiate from the center like some demented electronic sunburst. The Super USB 24-Port Hub will set you back $70, and comes (of course) with a power adapter.
