Dell's 24in models have always been popular in the PC Pro office, and while the S2409W may not be one of the manufacturer's all-singing, all-dancing models, Dell S2409W does offer a high-quality panel at a reasonable price. So you won't find expensive extras such as USB ports or fully adjustable stands the S2409W's stand only tilts and Dell hasn't even seen fit to include a set of basic integrated speakers. All this helps to keep the price low, but unlike many other sub-£200 monitors it doesn't sacrifice image quality in the process.

High-definition video clips looked sharp and detailed on the lOSOp panel, and the 5ms
response time - slightly down on the 2ms of most here - didn't manifest itself in any noticeable blurring in fast scenes. Plus, if you do need audio during a gaming session, there's a headphone output that will work if you're connected via the HDMI port. Other than that you get the usual DVI and VGA connectors, and a three-year on-site warranty with next business day response times. If Dell had managed to squeeze all this into a price just a little lower, the 52409W might walk away with an award this month. As Dell S2409W is, it's crowded out by the £177 LG, with its fullyadjustable stand and integrated speakers. We'd go for that every time, but the Dell is a close runner-up.

Asus VW246H : Features, Price And Review

The design is pleasant enough, with the usual Asus silver strip along the bottom of the frame and the control buttons clearly labelled at the bottom-right. The menu is a little small, but there are plenty of options.Even then, we saw notable backlight bleed at the top and bottom of our black test screen, although it must be said the black level on the whole was actually pretty deep. Our white test screen was fairly bright and mostly even, with just a small dark area towards the top edge, and gradients were smooth. Colours were a little off, though, with a cold tone to the panel that we couldn't eliminate to a satisfying degree, and this puts its image score behind similarly priced 1080p rivals such as the Dell and LG.

Unfortunately, it doesn't have any major design features to claw back that deficit, with a fixed-height stand and no luxuries such as USB ports. True, the 2W speakers are loud enough to use for personal entertainment, and there's an HDMI port to go with DVI and VGA, but that's hardly unusual this month. All in alL the VW246H is undoubtedly an attractive monitor and it does come at a reasonable price, but other TFTs in the group offer everything it does and more.

Acer H243H : Features,Price And Review

At first glance you'd be forgiven for thinking Acer has been admiring Samsung's consumer
monitors recently, for the sleek black H243H is glossy, curvy and features a nice set of glowing touch-sensitive controls beneath the screen. But get a little closer and the comparison doesn't really hold up. The problem is the difference in build quality: this Acer H243H simply isn't in Samsung's league, with a cheap, plasticky feel to the chassis, and a frustrating lack of responsiveness to those buttons. It makes setup a little awkward, particularly as the "left" and "right" buttons actually correspond to up and down movements in the laggy menu.

Poor design aside, though, the Acer H243H performed pretty well in our image quality
tests. It didn't wow us with either its deep blacks or bright whites, but both were perfectly acceptable - the former showed only a thin sliver of backlight bleed, and the panel was evenly lit. Our gradient ramps showed a smooth and even progression from black to white, and a slightly orangey red was the only notable problem with its otherwise decent colour reproduction.

Like most here, it has a 16:91,920 x 1,080 panel, and while the H243H comes with only a
basic fixed stand, you'll find HDMI, DVI and VGA ports on the back, as well as a reasonable set of IW speakers. But everything the Acer does, others do better: the LG, for example, has a similar core specificarion but better design and build, a lifting, pivoring stand and superior image quality for considerably less. With this in mind, the Acer looks merely average.

NOW WE have HDTV, what's next? 3D TV. 3D movies have been taking off at the box office. About 15 major feature films will be released in 3D in 2009, with twice that number set for 2010. HDTV manufacturers are scrambling to support 3DTV Both plasma and 120Hz LCD technology are adaptable to 3DTV using active glasses—not the passive glasses used in most 3D movie theaters. Active glasses use LCD material to block the light first to one eye and then to the other, at very fast rates. By synchronizing them to the content on the HDTV, 3DTV technology can present full-resolution 1080p images sequentially to the left and right eyes, and still have a total frame rate of 60Hz. Other technologies can show 3D images with either passive glasses or no glasses at all, but are too expensive to manufacture or have significant viewing limitations.

One roadblock for 3D content has been the lack of an industry standard, but that's changing
fast. Hollywood already adds depth information to many of its films, and translates this into
different formats that different cinema projection systems use—the RealD system based on
polarized light, for example, or the Dolby system that relies on sophisticated RGB color filters
to create stereoscopic images. Creating a similar "home 3D master" is not that difficult—SMPTE
(an organization of industry engineers) is well on the way to defining such a specification.
Such a master can provide data for a range of display formats. And the Blu-ray Disc Associa-
tion is working on a standard for storing 3D on on prepackaged media. HDTVs can be made to work with a variety of 3D data-stream formats.Down the road, HDTVs should be 3D as well.

Toshiba DMF82XKU is 8-inch digital picture frame ($180; a 10-inch $230 model is also available) has a sleek design and some useful wireless features. But looks aren't everything: Its menu icons are difficult to decipher, and the interface can be sluggish, making for a frustrating user experience. The chic-looking black frame is accented with a narrow acrylic border (it is also
available in white as the DMF82XWU). Toshiba DMF82XKU 's 1GB of internal memory lets you store plenty of photos and music. It supports SD/SDHC, MultiMediaCard,XD-Picture Card, and Memory Stick or Memory Stick Duo, and it will play content from an inserted card.

As we now expect from a wireless frame, Toshiba's DMF82XKU allows users to access online content from various Web sites, streaming that content via a Frame Channel account that you set up. Like most of its Wi-Fi brethren, the unit must remain tethered to an AC adapter. The frame is heavy, too, with a chunky protrusion on the back, so it really looks best on a desk. To access the DMF82XKU's menu, you can use the included remote. its buttons require a lot of pressure—or the touch-sensitive controls on the frame's right side. Unfortunately, the menu's cryptic icons make operation difficult, and the frame is slow to respond to commands.

The Toshiba DMF82XKU offers calendar and clock views. Slideshows can display with or without music. Images appeared punchy, with high contrast, and photos generally looked sharp, with good detail.

HP'S DREAMSCREEN 100 : Features,Specification And Review

With its new DreamScreen, HP expands the digital photo frame concept to include applications normally associated with stand-alone tablets. This 10-inch, $250 model incorporates wireless support for popular apps such as Facebook, Pandora, Snapfish, and HP's own packaging of Net radio stations. Sleek and shiny black, the DreamScreen 100 is better suited for sitting on a desktop than hanging on a wall, due to its weight and the need to keep it plugged in.

Setup was easy, even with the labor of entering passwords and network keys via the remote. The interface is attractive, intuitive, and highly readable. In addition, a CD provides video tutorials and an intuitive desktop program that lets you drag and drop audio, photo, and video files from your PC into the frame's 2GB of internal memory. As other frames do, the DreamScreen lets you program on and off times, and it has both clock and calendar functions.

The screen's display was impressive and crisp. Sound was a strong point: Though you won't get booming bass or extreme clarity, the frame cranks out better audio than most laptops do. The Facebook app lets you view friends' updates and photos, while the Snapfish app shows online albums. HP's radio feature is neat,but navigation is limited adding stations to your favorites list is a chore that involves lots of drilling.

LG 47LH5S:An HDTV With a Soft Side

Most HDTVs can produce a more accurate picture after some fine-tuning. But arcane picture controls are the last thing you want to fid¬dle with while you're setting up a new TV. LG's 47-inch 47LH55 LCD features the company's new DIY calibration system, Picture Wizard, which makes initial setup an intuitive process. The set's excellent energy efficiency and low price are appealing too, but this TV's picture quality isn't quite what you get with pricier competitors.The 47LH55 features a classic glossy black bezel bordering its matte-finished screen. The inputs on this LCD include four HDMI, two component video, one VGA, one RF, and a USB port. In testing, the Picture Wiz¬ard successfuly guided me through bright¬ness, contrast, color, and tint controls, but it doesn't cover more advanced adjustments.The dark-colored screen is effective at producing a well-contrasted picture in a brightly lit room.
